The Capegate Craft Beer Festival takes place on 30 & 31 August this year. We’ll be hosting over 10 craft breweries and distilleries in an underground location, at entrance 6.

We chatted to some of the breweries that will be at the festival to find out a bit more about their craft beer journey. Have a look below to see how the Urban Brewing Co., Noongun Brewery and Wagon Trail Brewery businesses started.

Noon Gun is a family-owned brewery in Muizenberg. The brewery has been three years in the making, which started with planning, licensing application and premises identification.

The name Noon Gun comes from the two guns that stood at the Lion’s Head on Signal Hill, which since 1902 has been fired at noon every day. The cannon’s calibre and type are 18-Pounder, Smooth drills and Muzzle Loaders.  This was therefore also the inspiration behind the names.

In 2015, the services of a very seasoned brewer helped with the design and recipes of the Noon Gun brew. Initially, only three beers were bottled: Smooth Bore Lager, Muzzle Loader Weiss and 18-Pounder Session IAP.

Since then, two beers have been added, namely the Gunslinger Pilsner and Bombardier Light Lager. There is also a seasonal beer that is only brewed in winter – the Gunlock Stout, which is very popular and only available at selected restaurants.

The team is now working on a Barley Wine beer that is being matured in wooden barrels. This beer is more for the connoisseurs that enjoy a sherrie type of beer with an alcohol level of around 12%.

Noon Gun’s next project is to expand to other markets and are currently working hard to enter the Gauteng market.

The brewery and Tap room started out in 2015, located next to the famous Hout Bay market in Cape Town. They are open seven days a week, and all brewing takes place within the brewery on-site. Their beers have won many accolades over the years, and their products can be found in numerous Western Cape retailers as well as local select restaurants.

We will see more of Urban Brewing company at key beer festivals as well as new exciting brews and surprise beers. They will continue to brew top class, quality craft beer whilst collaborating with new exciting brands.

Wagon Trail Brewery, the latest addition to the Anura collection, is a micro-brewery, with a capacity of a 500litre batch brew, offering a selection of craft beers as well as a brewpub. Their industrial style brew pub allows you to sample their selection of craft beers, while witnessing the beer making process in action and enjoying their menu comprising of hand-produced charcuterie, cheeses and laidback gastro-pub style foods. Think beef burgers, crispy pork belly, spicy wings and rotisserie chicken. When the sun comes out, all this can be enjoyed on their expansive deck overlooking the Lillypad pond.

Brewed on the site of the old route used to service the trading post at Cape Town Harbour in 1819, their beer pays homage to those who forged the original wagon trail and their enduring quest for refreshment. Each of their finely crafted beers is an ice-cold, thirst-quenching tribute to pioneering spirit.

Every unexpected twist, a salute to those trailblazers who break the rules for rewarding results.

Wagon Trail Brewery has recently added a Gin & Tonic product called, Dutch Republic Juniper. The G&T is mixed and blended in the brewery with the Gin component made from Anura’s very own wine spirit infused with a variety of Botanicals. The Dutch Republic will be available at this year’s Capegate Craft Beer Festival.

Till now all beers have only been sold through all Anura wine estate outlets however they plan on expanding to distribute their beers in bottles locally as well as export. A newly commissioned automated bottling line has been purchased to cope with the extra production demand for distribution.
